Retiring BU(802.1x) & Wireless Certificate Update – Sunday 6/30

We are writing to inform you of several initiatives taking place this summer to enhance wireless service across campus. Our efforts include replacing older wireless access points, transitioning from BU (802.1x) to eduroam*, a global roaming wireless access service, and updating our wireless certificate.

These upgrades aim to provide better security, coverage, reliability, and support for the growing number of devices used by our campus community.

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?
On Sunday, June 30, 2024, the BU (802.1x) wireless network will be retired and replaced with eduroam. Additionally, we will update the BU wireless certificate on the same day. Campus Wi-Fi improvements continue annually as we upgrade wireless access points across campus to enhance coverage and performance.

HOW WILL I BE IMPACTED?
BU (802.1x) Wireless Network Retirement
The BU (802.1x) wireless network will be retired and no longer accessible, effective Sunday June 30, 2024. If you have already connected your devices to eduroam before BU (802.1x) is retired, your transition should be seamless. You may only need to accept the new radius.bu.edu certificate to continue wireless services.

We encourage you to adopt eduroam today by following these steps:

  1. From your device, select eduroam from the list of available wireless networks.
  2. Log in using your full BU email address (login@bu.edu) and BU (Kerberos) password.
  3. If prompted, accept and trust the “radius.bu.edu” certificate for our server.
  4. Once connected to eduroam, delete or forget the “BU (802.1x)” network.

Annual Wireless Certificate Update
As part of this update, your device may prompt you to accept the new “radius.bu.edu” certificate.

If prompted, to reconnect to wireless you will need to perform a one-time acceptance of the new ”radius.bu.edu” certificate on your device. Once accepted, you will be reconnected. You may need to restart your device.

If your device still does not reconnect, you may need to remove the BU wireless network options and reconnect using the eduroam wireless network. For directions on reconnecting or reconfiguring your device, visit our eduroam page on TechWeb.

For help or assistance anytime, please contact the IT Help Center by sending an email to ithelp@bu.edu or calling 617-353-HELP(4357).

Thank you for working with us as we continue to improve BU’s campus WiFi.
