Resolved – Service-impacting Incident – Critical Services

Incident Discovery Time: 03:20pm on 02/02/2011
Services Impacted: Exchange email, Blackberry Enterprise Server, Blackboard, Blackboard Vista, SharePoint, mainframe and Link services, BlueGene, departmental file shares and applications, and backup services

Description of Impact:
Servers were shut down due to a power outage at 881 Commonwealth Ave and 25 Buick St.

Current Status:
Emergency generator power has been provided for restoration of critical services which should all be available by 11:59PM on 2/2/2011.

11:15pm update:

Service has been restored to the following services: Exchange, Blackberry, mainframe and Link services, BlueGene, departmental file shares and applications, and backup services.

SharePoint is targeted to be restored by 11:45pm.

10:15pm update:

We are targeting full Exchange and BlackBerry services restored by 10:45pm.

Remaining services, mainframe and Link services, BlueGene, SharePoint, departmental file shares and applications, as well as backup services for a number of systems are targeted to be restored by 11:30pm.

9:15pm update:

MyPrint services have been restored.

Emergency generator power has been provided for restoration of critical services.

We are targeting full Exchange, BlackBerry enterprise server, Mainframe and Link services to be restored by 11PM at the earliest. Estimated time for restoration of additional services such as BlueGene, SharePoint, departmental file shares and applications, as well as backup services for a number of systems will be posted once we receive an updated projection for restoration of power.

8:15pm update:

We expect full Exchange, Mainframe and Link services to be restored shortly after 10PM. Estimated time for restoration of additional services such as SharePoint, file servers, and specialized department services will be posted once we receive an updated projection for restoration of power.

7:15pm update:
Exchange is now available via xmail.bu.edu and desktop software for BUMC, LAW, ENG, and SMG clients only. BlackBerry support is unavailable, but iPhone and other mobile devices using ActiveSync are working for the same set of clients.

Blackboard, Blackboard Vista, and some services using WebLogin authentication such as ACS/Horde webmail are now available.

Services that are still unavailable include SharePoint, Mainframe, The Link, and possibly others.

Estimated time for restoring all services is still expected to be 10PM at the earliest based upon the projection for restoration of power.

Next update will be posted at 8:15pm

6:15pm update:
Exchange is now available via xmail.bu.edu to clients from BUMC, LAW, ENG, and SMG.

Other services remain unavailable. Estimated time for restoring all services is still expected to be 10PM at the earliest based upon the projection for restoration of power.

Estimated time for restoring all services is currently expected to be 10PM at the earliest based upon the projection for restoration of power.

It is currently estimated that Exchange will be available around 7PM for BUMC, LAW, ENG, and SMG only.

Current Status
Services that are currently unavailable include: Blackboard 8, Blackboard Vista, webmail, Exchange, SharePoint, Mainframe, the Link, and other services that use WebLogin for authentication

IS&T is currently working on bring individual services online. This post will be updated as they become available.

Description of Impact
Servers are being shut down due to a power outage at 881 Commonwealth Ave / 25 Buick St. The following services will be unavailable until power is restored: Exchange email SharePoint Departmental servers Blackboard Vista Mainframe possibly other services as well
