Wired Network
| Overview |
IS&T maintains an extensive computing and communications network throughout the Charles River and Medical campuses. This infrastructure includes network outlets, wiring, the campus core network, data center networks, and dedicated access to various external networks, such as the Internet and Internet2. We design and install all network infrastructure associated with renovations and new construction, including network jacks, copper wiring, fiber cabling, switch infrastructure, and connections to the network backbone. Through this network, members of the community can directly access network-based resources using wired jacks supporting data rates ranging from 10 Mbps through 10 Gbps. |
| Available To |
Students, Faculty, Researchers, Staff, Departments, Prospective Students, New/Incoming Students, Guests |
| Benefits |
Centralizing design, installation, management, and maintenance for the entire network infrastructure ensures homogeneity. All the subnets and components work together in a predictable and reliable manner, providing simplicity, consistency, transparency, and security for everyone, regardless of where they connect to our network. Custom network designs are available to meet any requirements while ensuring interoperability with other parts of the network. |
| Key Features |
- Data transfer rates to suit every need, ranging from 10 Mbps through 10 Gbps
- Reliable, dedicated access to the University network and the Internet, with connections to several special purpose networks devoted to research and educational needs
- Custom network designs for unique research and administrative needs

| Requirements |
Access generally requires just an Ethernet network adapter (standard in most computers) and an active network connection; for more information, see the Wired Network Access page under Accounts & Network Access. |
| Cost |
Generally there are no charges to use non-residential network services. Students living in the residences must have paid the ResNet Fee before connecting to the network in one of the residences. Network design, installation, and port activation charges vary; departments interested in these services should contact nethelp@bu.edu for more information. |
