Services Impacted: All University Telephone Services
Resolution: Verizon reports normal telephone service has been restored to the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus. To report on-campus emergencies, please resume using 617-353-2121 on the Charles River Campus. On the Medical Campus, use your normal security and emergency reporting phone numbers. IS&T will continue to monitor telephone services for any residual issues and post any non-critical updates on https://www.bu.edu/tech/support/purchase/personal/studentoffice .
Description of Impact: There is currently a major telephone problem affecting portions of the city of Boston; the problem is affecting multiple customers and services including some Police and Fire agencies as well as Boston University at both the Charles River Campus and parts of the Medical Campus including the Fuller building, and other customers in this area of Boston. Calls to 911 are working. Verizon has confirmed a service interruption in telephone service that was caused by a catastrophic cut to a major fiber optic line.

Current Status: Verizon reports that telephone service has been restored to West Campus, completing service restoration to the Charles River Campus. Service to the Medical Campus will continue to gradually be restored. IS&T will continue to monitor the service for residual issues.

Current Status:
Verizon is reporting that we should have full restoration of telephone service to Charles River Campus locations east of the BU Bridge. BU Police are on the west side of the BU Bridge so please call 9-1-1 for any emergencies until further notice.

Verizon reports that 20-30% of effective services have been restored. They expect services to be restored within the next few hours. IS&T will continue to monitor and update about residual issues.

Current Status:
Verizon has informed us that a workaround using additional capacity is being implemented and service will be restored gradually. Some calls are now starting to be made successfully, but there is not yet an estimated time to restore all services. IS&T will continue to monitor throughout the day and communicate updates.

Current Status:
Verizon is currently developing a workaround that is gradually restoring service. Some calls are now starting to be made successfully, but there is not yet an estimated time to restore all services and issues are expected to continue throughout the day. IS&T will continue to monitor throughout the day and communicate updates.

*** Original incident report ***
Services Impacted: The Entire University Telephone System. Both the 353 and 358 telephone lines.
Description of Impact: The entire University Telephone System has a MAJOR SYSTEM FAILURE at this time. We are NOT receiving ANY incoming calls. Calls to other Telephone System lines on the University Campus, both to the 353 and 358 exchanges are not completing. The only calls known to complete are outside calls using 9+1 dialing. I repeat, no calls from outside Boston University are coming in at this time.
Incident Description: The problem is at the Verizon Central Office. Verizon management has informed us that there is a fiber optic related problem that they are attempting to diagnose now.
