    American Studies (PhD)

    The American Studies Program provides interdisciplinary doctoral preparation in the study of American culture and society. This program trains students to understand and interpret the American experience as it has been expressed in multiple forms. Graduates of our program have gone on to build teaching careers at leading institutions of higher learning and to hold significant curatorial and administrative positions at leading museums, public history sites, and cultural institutions.

    Anatomy & Neurobiology (PhD)

    This program includes courses in anatomy and neuroscience that are offered by the department or by related departments. Students participate as Teaching Fellows in medical and graduate school courses as part of our Vesalius Teaching Apprenticeship. The PhD curriculum consists of required courses, seminars, teaching apprenticeship, and electives as well as Dissertation Research.

    Anthropology (PhD)

    The Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology provides a broad background in the field, with primary emphasis on sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology, or archaeology. Graduates will be prepared for careers in academia, consulting, or applied professions in the discipline. Applicants should have a BA or MA in anthropology or show evidence of equivalent preparation.

    Behavioral Neuroscience (PhD)

    The mission of the Behavioral Neuroscience program is to provide students with a firm foundation in basic principles of experimental neuropsychology in preparation for embarking on a career as an experimental neuropsychologist and behavioral neuroscientist in academia or industry. The program is unique in that the focus is on human neurobehavioral disorders in relation to brain structure and function.

    Bioinformatics (PhD)

    Our PhD in Bioinformatics provides you unique interdisciplinary training in the science, engineering, medicine, and ethics of twenty-first-century cell biology and prepares you for careers in academia and industry in the areas of molecular life sciences. For admissions, our students need at least a bachelor’s degree in a field related to bioinformatics, preferably one with a strong component in mathematics and computer science.

    Our Doctor of Philosophy in Biology will train you at the highest level in one of three broad subfields within modern biology: Cellular & Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Ecology, Behavior & Evolution.     Biomedical Engineering (PhD)

    The Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering is a highly quantitative approach to the biomedical sciences, based on principles of engineering and physical science. The department is among the largest of its kind in the US and is home to award-winning faculty, exceptional students, and numerous research centers and laboratories engaged in an array of interdisciplinary biomedical activities. Faculty are primarily focused on applying engineering, computational, and analytical techniques to biological systems—from the nanoscale level of DNA to the macroscopic level of organ systems.

    The Program in Biomedical Sciences (PiBS) is an umbrella comprised of 9 programs/departments that provides rigorous training by integrating the foundations of interdisciplinary biomedical research with focused investigation and preparation for career advancement. The degree-granting departments and programs are: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Genetics & Genomics, Microbiology, Molecular & Translational Medicine, Nutrition & Metabolism, Orofacial & Skeletal Biology, Pathology, and Physiology. In addition, students can participate in the Immunology Training Program, ultimately earning their degrees within the Microbiology or Pathology programs.

The program meets the needs of the health professional who wishes to continue with public health training and achieve a higher and more specialized degree and the statistician who wishes to specialize in statistical methods for biomedical or epidemiologic applications.
