Autism & Emotional/Behavioral Disorders Certificate

If you’re interested in teaching or supporting students on the autism spectrum, or those with emotional and behavioral disorders, the Autism & Emotional/Behavioral Disorders Certificate program at BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development may be the right choice for you. You’ll learn about autism, emotional disorders, and behavioral disorders; their legal definitions; and how these disabilities affect students’ experiences in the classroom. You’ll also learn how to teach inclusively, use data to make decisions in the classroom, and plan instruction based on sound research.

Autism & Emotional/Behavioral Disorders Certificate Requirements

The Autism & Emotional/Behavioral Disorders Certificate can be taken in one of two tracks:

Autism Endorsement Track

The 26-credit track is available to BU Wheelock students in the Special Education EdM, or those who hold an Initial or Professional license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities, Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, or Teacher of the Visually Impaired. Students who successfully complete the Autism Endorsement Track will be able to receive the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education’s Autism Endorsement.

Non-Endorsement Track

The 18-credit track is available to all BU Wheelock graduate students and non-matriculated postbaccalaureate students. This track contributes to students’ general knowledge about autism and emotional/behavioral disorders, but it does not lead to the Autism Endorsement.

Learn the requirements for both tracks in the BU Bulletin.
