Degree Requirements

BU Wheelock’s graduate certificate in English as a Second Language (ESL) Pre-K–6/5–12 (Licensure) prepares educators to teach English as a second language and to develop academic supports for English learners in US elementary, middle, and high schools. In this program, you’ll discuss the relationship between language, culture, and equity—and how they relate to the linguistic, academic, and social-emotional development of English learners. You’ll also gain thorough background knowledge about second-language acquisition, assessment, culturally sensitive teaching, and curriculum development.

This graduate certificate program is geared toward educators who are already licensed in another subject but want to earn an initial ESL initial license in Massachusetts. You may choose one of two tracks: elementary (PreK–6) or secondary (5–12). The program takes an analytical and critical approach to language teaching, challenging embedded systems of race, power, and privilege throughout the curriculum.
