Design evidence-based research methods that produce results
Curriculum
The Master of Science (MS) in Translation and Implementation Science establishes a solid foundation in qualitative and quantitative methods. As part of the Population Health Research umbrella program, students will learn how to design evidence-based interventions that generate sustainable results and improve health overall.
Graduates of the program gain a vast skill set in implementation science research, organizational change theory, and community-engaged research. The rigorous MS curriculum examines systemic application of research findings and solutions to the barriers that prevent widespread implementation.
MS in Translation and Implementation Science Program Structure
The Translation and Implementation Science master’s degree challenges the status quo approach to public health policy. Maintaining a tight focus on strategic methodologies, the program enables public health leaders and policymakers to conduct practical, evidence-based research and develop solutions that improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care.
The curriculum blends this advanced Translation and Implementation Science knowledge with research methods, real-world experience, faculty-mentored research, and professional network building in Boston and beyond.
Through this degree program, students can confidently perform the following research responsibilities:
- Critically evaluate research reports and publications.
- Design data collection and management plans.
- Analyze and synthesize research findings to inform evidence-based policies or recommendations.
- Develop a scientific hypothesis and design a research study to test the hypothesis.
- Communicate research results in technical and non-technical terms to potential stakeholders.
Boston University also offers degrees in Global Health, Climate and Health, Epidemiology, and Public Health Data Science. Students can also work directly with a faculty mentor to design a customized specialization tailored specifically to their unique professional goals.
Flexible Options for Full- and Part-Time Study
The School of Public Health offers options for either full- or part-time study for students in the MS in Translation and Implementation Science program. Combined with the opportunity to complete some MS courses online, this flexibility allows students to build a manageable schedule of study that meets their goals and need for balance in work, education, and home life.

Faculty Snapshot
Ellen Childs, MA, PhD—Research Scientist, Health Law, Policy & Management
Ellen Childs is an organizational sociologist and social psychologist. Inherent in health systems are individuals, groups, organizational structures, and system processes that can inhibit and undermine a health system’s potential. While Dr. Childs’ research has explored a broad range of topics, both clinical and social, the underlying theme is the interpersonal and organizational stumbling blocks that impede effective systems change.
Outcomes
