Major Requirements and the BU Hub
For major requirements, please see the SHA website. Course descriptions for SHA courses can also be found in the BU Bulletin. SHA requires 800 hours of work experience in the hospitality industry and an international experience. Students in CGS fulfill this requirement through their CGS coursework in London. If students wish to study abroad again, they should meet with the director of student services in SHA to discuss how the credit earned on an abroad program will be applied to a degree and affect graduation.
Foundational CAS Courses
*Students will need to fulfill the second language requirement by successfully completing a modern foreign language course at the 112-level, or with a score of 560 or above on the SAT foreign language subject test, or placement into 3rd semester or higher. Appropriate AP scores may also fulfill this requirement. If a student does place out of the language requirement they will need to fulfill credits through elective coursework.
Work Experiences (0 units)
In addition to regular coursework, SHA students complete two, 300-hour, non-unit work experiences. The purpose of each work experience is to help the students make connections in the field as well as gain the kind of experience that will allow them to obtain meaningful employment after graduation. These requirements are linked to the non-unit courses SHA HF 140 and SHA HF 240.
BU Hub
SHA HF 100 fulfills a single requirement in each of the following BU Hub areas: Historical Consciousness, Digital/Multimedia Expression, Teamwork/Collaboration.
SHA HF 460 fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Writing-intensive Course, Creativity/Innovation.
Students continuing from CGS to SHA will earn their remaining Writing-Intensive Course requirement from CGS SS201 or CGS SS 202. Additionally, students on this pathway should plan to enroll in CGS HU 202 to fulfill their remaining Creativity/Innovation requirement.
Choose your electives carefully to fulfill any remaining BU Hub requirements. External courses are not eligible for Hub general education credit.
