Frequently Asked Registration Questions
How do I register for classes? If you are accepted into a degree program at STH, you will receive an e-mail with degree-specific registration instructions when registration opens. Once you receive your BU Username and Kerberos password, you can log into the Student Intranet and view the How to Register Page which details the registration process for all student populations. Depending on your degree program, you may be required to fill out a Pre-Registration form or meet with a faculty advisor or degree program advisor in order to lift your Advising Hold on MyBU Student. If you want to register for an STH class as a non-degree student/ certificate student, e-mail sthadmis@bu.edu about getting admitted as a non-degree student. Once admitted, we will e-mail you registration information.
What classes should I register for? You can view your program requirements on the STH Academic Bulletin and track your completion of those requirements on your Plan of Study. It is your responsibility to take classes that count for your degree program and meet program requirements so you can graduate by your program deadline. When choosing between free-elective options, you should read course descriptions and/or consult with your faculty advisor to select courses that will help you meet your academic or vocational goals. The purpose of free electives is to promote exploration as well as customization and specialization. Reading STH faculty profiles may also be helpful in determining who you would like to take classes with. By studying at BU, you have an amazing opportunity to take courses throughout the University and the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium. We highly recommend you take advantage of this opportunity sometime throughout your program if you have free-elective options. OMDiv and DMin students are required to petition to take courses outside of the specified OMDiv and DMin course offerings, respectively. If you are planning to be ordained in a specific religious denomination, consult with your ordaining body regarding the classes that you are required to take for ordination. STH maintains a Denominational Resources webpage to guide UMC, UCC, and Anglican/Episcopal students who are in local ordination processes. However, it is always the students responsibility to follow the policies of their ordaining body.
How can I register for a course through the Boston Theological Interreligious (BTI) Consortium? Yes! Students who have matriculated into an STH degree program and who are making satisfactory academic progress each term are eligible to cross-register in the schools of the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium (BTI). The steps to register for a BTI course are detailed on the BTI Consortium Registration webpage. There are degree-specific limits for how many BTI courses a student can take in their program over all and in a given semester. Only ½ of a student’s total courses for a given term can be taken outside of STH.
Can I register for non-STH Classes? Yes! Most STH students can register for graduate level courses throughout many of BU’s 17 schools in colleges if the course relates to the learning outcomes of a student’s degree program and plan of study. Please read STH’s Cross-Registration policy closely. Graduate level courses across BU schools are generally numbered 500 or higher.
What if the class I want to take is full? Not to worry! The programs at the BU School of Theology promote flexibility in coursework, and allow you to prioritize the classes that are most crucial to your academic and vocational pursuits. Even if you’re unable to register for a desired class in your first term, it’s highly likely that you’ll be able to take the course later on in your degree program. You may also email sthregfa@bu.edu to be added to a course waitlist, though we’re unable to guarantee that a seat will become available.
What are the deadlines to add and drop classes? The Office of the University Registrar maintains a calendar of semester dates for standard semester courses, including add, drop without a “w,” and drop with a “w” deadlines. There are alternative add and drop deadlines for classes with non-standard dates, such as DMin intensives, A-term/J-term courses, and 1 unit workshops, which can be viewed on MyBU Student. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the deadline for all of their classes.

Your DPA may change throughout the duration of your program, but the entire Student Services Team is here to support you!
