I-9 Process

Special COVID Notice: as of March 2020 we’ve moved to a fully remote I-9 process. Instructions of how to use this process are included automatically in a new hire’s onboarding email.

Based on the requirements of the Immigration and Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees of Boston University must complete a Form I-9 within their first three days of employment. Employees who do not complete a Form I-9 within their first three days of work will not be able to continue working at the University until a Form I-9 has been completed.

HR will send an email notification (or in some cases a written notification) to new employees once an offer has been accepted.  New employees will complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 electronically at the BU Form I-9 site on their own on or prior to their first day of work. Section 2 of the Form I-9 should be completed on the new employee’s first day of work in Human Resources. No appointment is necessary, employees can drop in to either office to complete their I-9.

Information on how to access Form I-9 instructions and a list of acceptable documents is available on the BU Form I-9 site. This information should also be included in the email and employment confirmation letter.

Section 2 of the Form I-9 is usually completed during the new employee’s orientation. In situations where orientation is not attended in the employee’s first three days of employment, they will be required to visit HR to complete this federally mandated step during a separate, earlier visit.

If you are hiring an individual that will be based outside Boston, or will not be in Boston until after their hire date, there is a remote I-9 option for those individuals. Please reach out to us at onboard@bu.edu to initiate this process.

Please note that it is unlawful to employ individuals who do not present appropriate I-9 verification.
