ISSO Services and Appointment Scheduling for International Faculty, Scholars & Employees

The ISSO Scholar Services team is available for both in-person and virtual appointments. Please review the appointment types and services below to schedule a meeting or to obtain information about how to request a particular service or assistance.

These appointments and services are intended for faculty, researchers, employees, and associated department administrators and NOT for current Boston University students. Current students should schedule an appointment with the student team. New incoming students should send questions via email to issogac@bu.edu.

New J-1 Exchange Visitor Orientation and Check-in

New J-1 Exchange Visitors are required to attend orientation as part of their ISSO Clearance and check-in process. New J-1 Scholars receiving a BU salary will complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification during this time and do not need to schedule a separate in-person I-9 appointment.

Upon arrival in the US, please register for an upcoming session.

15-Minute Advising Appointment at ISSO

In-Person appointments for new and continuing scholars as well as department administrators who are cleared to visit campus are available for certain services:

  • I-9 employment eligibility verification
  • J-1 DS-2019 travel signature request
  • Other quick questions pertaining to travel, visa, employment, and immigration processing

New H-1B Orientation and Overview

In-person appointments for new employees in the H-1B as well as for continuing employees who have been approved for a change of status from another immigration classification to H-1B are available. New H-1B employees will complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification during this time and do not need to schedule a separate in-person I-9 appointment. Employees based inside the US will also be able to pick-up their H approval notice at this appointment. This appointment allows us to provide an overview of the H-1B regulations and answer any questions related to this classification.

Check-in and Clearance for (non-J-1) Visiting Students and Visiting Researchers

New Visiting Students and Visiting Researchers who are not sponsored under BU’s J-1 Exchange Visitor designation are encouraged to check-in with us remotely. Please e-mail your scholar advisor and attach the Scholar & Employee Clearance Form, your Visiting Researcher or Visiting Scholar appointment letter which would have been provided by your host department, and a copy of all relevant immigration documents (i.e. passport, entry stamp, visa, etc.)

If preferred, you are welcome to check-in at the ISSO front desk during normal business hours (M,T,Th,F 9am – 5pm; W 12pm – 5pm).

Advising appointment

International scholars. employees and department administrators can request a remote appointment to discuss all matters pertaining to travel, visa, employment, and immigration processing. Employees and scholars who have not been cleared to visit campus should seek assistance through a virtual appointment.

(no advising component or review with Scholar Services)

Scholars, employees and department administrators who have either received confirmation from ISSO Scholar Services that a document is available for pick-up or have paperwork to drop-off for a member of the Scholar Services team can do so during normal business hours (M, T, Th, F 9am – 5pm; W 12pm – 5pm). If you have questions or prefer to drop-off or pick-up with a Scholar Services team member, please schedule a 15-minute (in-person) advising appointment instead.
