Dual Degrees
Dual degrees offered through the Boston University School of Theology (STH) give students the opportunity to build relationships in multiple University communities during their academic studies, as well as access to interdisciplinary coursework taught by world-class faculties, which develops students’ expertise in their vocational fields.
Master of Divinity & Master of Sacred Music (MDiv/MSM)
The Dual Degree Program in Theology and Music Ministry (MDiv/MSM) is designed for those preparing to be church musicians who wish to engage in a full range of theological studies and preparation for ordination. The program also allows students to develop their musical gifts to a professional level. Based on a perception that the integrity of worship comprises both word and music, the program prepares candidates for a dual ministry in areas such as church music and pastoral counseling, a position on a large staff, or for a comprehensive ministry as pastor and church musician in a small church. The four-year, full-time program leads to the Master of Sacred Music (MSM) and the Master of Divinity (MDiv). The two degrees, on the recommendation of the faculty, will be conferred simultaneously. The
STH Bulletin contains the official description of the degree program along with admissions and financial information.
Theology and Social Work Dual Degrees (MDiv/MSW, MTS/MSW)
The School of Theology and the School of Social Work offer two joint degree programs for students seeking to integrate theological study with professional social work practice: the
Master of Divinity (MDiv)/Master of Social Work (MSW) and the
Master of Theological Studies (MTS)/Master of Social Work (MSW). Students choose between clinical (individual and small group) or macro (community-based) social work practice options. There is room in this program for students with a long-standing interest in the urban environment and for those new to the field who wish to explore the dynamic realm of urban social work practice. Please see the full description of the degree program in the
STH Bulletin, which also contains admissions and financial information.
