Reverend Richard M. Hamilton (STH’63)

Scarborough - The Rev. Richard "Dick" Martin Hamilton, 87, of Scarborough, died peacefully on April 29, 2023, at Maine Medical, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 11, 1936, in Fredericktown, PA to Walter and Valeria Hamilton, and graduated from East Bethlehem High School in 1954. Dick earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1958 and Master of Sacred Theology Degree at Boston University School of Theology in 1963.
Dick began his ministry in 1958, serving the Bethel Methodist Church, followed by First Church South Portland, Gray Memorial Caribou, First UMC Bangor, School Street Gorham, and West Kennebunk UMC. He was appointed to serve as the District Superintendent in Northern Maine from 1982 to 1988.
Dick was committed to his ministries and was a compassionate and caring person for all people. His work in his parish and community was done with seemingly tireless effort, along with caring for his family. He was committed to and deeply involved in the larger ministry of the United Methodist Church in Maine and New England, earning the trust of the members, clergy, and Bishops to hold many leadership positions. He was committed to mission work in Maine and also internationally, traveling as a representative with Heifer Project, enjoying a Travel Study Program in the Holy Land, and taught courses at Bangor Theological Seminary. Dick was a skilled worship leader and preacher, creating the conditions and atmosphere in which people could truly experience their relationship with God.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Horton Hamilton, Scarborough; his daughters, Susan Ouellette of Niles OH, Judi Hope and husband, Greg, of Bangor; his sons, James Hamilton and wife, Collette, of Wells, Christopher Hamilton and wife, Jennifer, of White River Junction, VT, Andrew Hamilton and wife, Stacy, of Candia, NH; his stepdaughters, Lori Mayo and husband, Andy, of Windham, Sandra Hammerlund and husband, Jamie, of Chandler, AZ; his brother, Terry Hamilton and wife, Sharon, of Niles, OH; his sisters Janice Roeper of Lawrence, PA and Doris Cowden of Amity, PA; and many nieces and nephews. He was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he loved deeply and who provided great joy in his life.
He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Arlene Brooks Hamilton (d. 1997), his wife, Helen Eugley Hamilton (d. 2007).

Sujin Pak, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Bryan Stone, and Associate Dean for Students and Community Life Cristian De La Rosa awarded 11 outstanding students certificates reflecting their extraordinary contributions to the School and their fellow students.

At Boston University, students in professor Wesley J. Wildman’s Data, Society, and Ethics class developed a policy for using artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, this semester that has since been modified and adopted by the university’s Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences. The policy states that students must disclose any use of AI, include detailed information on how it was used, and not use AI tools during exams unless explicitly permitted.

“We are trying to embrace it and teach people how to learn, teach people how to use it, how to think with it,” Wildman said.

Youth Minister, Full-time, ELCA, TEC, UCC: Marblehead, MA

Searching for Youth Minister/Director to serve four local parishes in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Four churches in a small seaside town are collaborating to form a cooperative youth ministry. The churches—including a Lutheran church (ELCA), two Episcopal churches (TEC), and a congregational church (UCC)—seek to together create a shared progressive Christian youth group to meet the needs of the community. The Youth Minister position will play a crucial and foundational role, focusing on the middle school and high school youth in our shared parishes. It provides the opportunity to build a shared community among the churches and to create an engaging, innovative, progressive Christian youth program that supports a thriving, growing religious culture to serve our community across generations. This person will partner with clergy, staff, and volunteers to empower youth to grow their faith, to explore life questions, and to participate together in activities, events, and outreach.
The Youth Minister will be a colleague of the clergy of the four churches and will be supported and overseen by the Marblehead Youth Cooperative Ministry (MYCM) Board, made up of twelve appointed lay church members (three from each parish).  Interested candidates should bring a well-grounded Christian faith that can be shared and explored with young people. The candidate should be able to collaborate with a variety of others (clergy, youth, volunteers, community members) to accomplish goals and to build relationships. An ideal candidate is a gifted teacher/mentor of youth who respects young people, encourages questions and thoughtful discussions, fosters strong relationships, promotes inclusion, and builds community. Specific to inclusivity, the candidate will work to ensure a safe and accepting space for youth members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Communications with an emphasis in Social Media or Marketing or proven equivalent experience.
  • Five years of experience in marketing or communications experience in using social media tools.
  • Job requires great attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks.
  • Must have strong knowledge of social media.
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite CC including but not limited to Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dream Weaver, After Effects and Premiere; social Media apps and tools: Facebook, Twitter, bitly, Instagram, YouTube, and Canva; and web-based form creation.  Knowledge of AP manual of style.

Office Manager, Part-time; First Baptist Church, Newton, MA

First Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts is a welcoming and affirming congregation affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts and the Alliance of Baptists. Our Office Manager will provide administrative support for the minister and staff, help manage church communication, and serves as the first point of contact for the church, creating a welcoming and professional atmosphere for all internal and external communication.

In this key role, the Office Manager is responsible for the following:

Office Administration
• Maintain all office supplies and equipment, including ordering cleaning supplies and special items for worship
• Monitor the office budget and debit card balance
• Manage and update database with congregant contact information
• Create and maintain a filing system (paper and electronic) and ensure records are archived
• Arrange catering for special events

Building Management
• Serve as the primary point of contact with tenants (a day care center and two non-profits who use the space full time as well as a few other organizations present on a more limited basis)
• Manage the rental process including communication with potential renters, rental contracts, and documenting payment
• Coordinate and communicate with the sexton, properties committee, and vendors/companies providing services to the building or property
• Make appointments for regular maintenance and emergency service of equipment as needed
• Request and facilitate inspections as necessary to ensure compliance with regulations (e.g. fire extinguisher inspection, National Grid annual inspection, smoke detectors inspection, etc.)

Communication
• Publish worship bulletins and weekly e-news through MailChimp
• Create flyers, signs, and posters for events
• Assemble and edit quarterly newsletter
• Update our website

Qualifications

Acting Associate Pastor, Full-time; Congregational Church of Amherst, NH

Job Description:
The Acting Associate Pastor will be concerned with nurturing the growth of faith and service of people of all ages in our active congregation. Working with the Senior Pastor, they will help facilitate the congregation’s commitment, as declared in our mission statement, of being welcoming to all, transforming lives by grounding everything we do in God’s love, and serving our neighbors near and far in the service of Jesus Christ.
The Acting Associate Pastor will work with the Senior Pastor, staff, and lay leadership of the church in developing, expanding and enriching the parish ministries and spiritual life of the church. They will plan, direct, and coordinate ministry opportunities with the church in the areas of worship, pastoral care, youth ministry, spiritual life, and faith formation.


The Acting Associate Pastor will become a partner and team member of the Congregational Church of Amherst. They will help provide support, counseling, and pastoral care to all members of the church, as a colleague of the Senior Pastor. The Acting Associate Pastor will also actively support the United Church of Christ, the New Hampshire Conference, and the Hillsborough Association.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

*Youth Ministries
*Together with lay leaders motivate, organize, and lead Senior High and Middle High youth meetings, activities, retreats, worship services, and the annual Senior High mission trip.
*Together with lay leaders, organize and lead Confirmation classes, retreats, and service projects.
*Engage and be a spiritual presence in youth programs, in order to build a connection and level of trust with the youth in the church. Help deepen the self-perception of youth as an integral and vital part of the church.
*Provide leadership, spiritual guidance, and administration of youth programs, and assist lay leaders and youth with planning and implementation.
*Provide leadership for and recruit lay leaders within the youth fellowship.
Congregational Life and Pastoral Care:
*Participate in Sunday worship and seasonal worship (Advent Vespers, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday), working with the Senior Pastor to create engaging and meaningful worship services.
*Lead worship and preach at least once a month, at the discretion of the Senior Pastor.
*With the Senior Pastor, share responsibility for conducting all rites and sacraments of the church (communion, baptisms, weddings, funerals).
*Provide pastoral care and support to church members and church friends, and share responsibility for visits on behalf of the church.
*Regularly attend staff meetings, Church Council, Diaconate, and other team meetings as appropriate.
*Inform and engage the congregation in ecumenical activities and missions, and act as a mentor to lay leaders involved in such activities.
*Be open to and engage in other duties, as considered necessary by the Senior Pastor.
Spiritual Life and Education:
*Together with the Senior Pastor, be a leader, advisor and mentor for the congregation. Provide guidance and support to the congregation in finding ways of putting God’s call into action and in living into the purpose of welcoming, transforming, and sending.
*With the Senior Pastor, serve as a pastoral resource to the Christian Education Team and the Church School Coordinator.
*With the Senior Pastor, act as a resource, facilitator, and participant of adult education opportunities and discussion groups.
*Develop lay spiritual leaders, encourage and support lay-led spiritual life and education programs such as discussion groups, mission projects, and other types of small groups.

Reporting Relationship:
The Acting Associate Pastor is hired by the Associate Pastor Search Team, but will be directly responsible to the Senior Pastor. The Acting Associate Pastor will have a lay person advocate from the congregation of his/her own selection. This advocate will provide additional support and advice over and above that provided by the Senior Pastor. The Acting Associate Pastor will be a member of the Pastoral Relations Team (PRT), a support group for both pastors. The PRT will conduct at least four meetings during the year to help foster a healthy covenantal relationship between the clergy and congregation. The PRT will conduct an annual evaluation of the Acting Associate Pastor and make compensation recommendations to the Budget and Finances team for budget development and ultimate congregational considerations.

Total package commensurate with experience up to $68,000 max including all costs of wages, benefits, and housing allowance.
