Prof. Luis Menéndez-Antuña awarded 2023 Grant from Catholic Biblical Association

For the second year in a row, Assistant Professor of New Testament Luis Menéndez-Antuña was awarded a grant from the Catholic Biblical Association (CBA) to continue his research on Enslavement in Early Christianity.

“This grant, awarded [the] second year in a row, will allow me to continue working on my third book,” says Prof. Menéndez-Antuña. “This book seeks to understand the crucial role that enslavement played in the formation of the New Testament Canon. Many students are surprised to learn that enslaved people are ubiquitous in the New Testament, sometimes explicitly present, many times hidden in the text. My goal is to explore to what extent enslavement informed some theological ideas.”

According to the CBA website, their grant program was established in 2020 to “promote Biblical Scholarship by providing financial assistance to CBA Full Members for specific projects that advance this goal.”
