About Rebecca DeLuca

Why did you choose the Public Relations (MS) program?

I was looking for an experience to combine theoretical knowledge and hands-on experiences while learning from the best and brightest minds in Public Relations. Plus, having a top school like Boston University on your resume never hurts!

How did your time at COM help prepare you for your life post-COM?

COM taught me the agility necessary to work in fast-paced environments. While our professors expected only the highest-quality academic work, they also showed us how integral extracurricular opportunities were to our careers. I was a director in PRLab, an editor for The COMmunicator, a writer for The COMment, and had two internships throughout my time in COM: at Cone Communications and at the Boston University School of Social Work. These experience all taught me that in Communications, two days are never the same. As a Com Professional, you need to wear all hats and be able to execute each task efficiently and effectively.

What have you been up to since you graduated?

I help organizations tell stories that actually matter while they are busy changing the world. Currently, I am the Assistant Director of Communications for Development and Alumni Relations at Lasell College. I am also on the board of the Publicity Club of New England, supporting the Design team. Here, I help PR and Communications professionals like myself learn new things about the industry, network with other professionals and remain on the cutting edge of PR.

Can you talk about your current position? How did you choose it? What makes it exciting?

After completing my internship in the Communications Department of the Boston University School of Social Work, I knew I wanted my first job to be in nonprofit. When working in a nonprofit, it is more likely that you will be responsible for a variety of programs and tasks, as opposed to having more specialized responsibilities. At Lasell, I manage all things story-telling: social media, email marketing, direct mail, design, website content, video marketing and more. This means I am growing in a variety of areas and specialties at once. Plus, working at an organization with a mission makes each day feel more important.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the Public Relations (MS) program?

You will only get out what you put in. A Master's Degree relies heavily on self-guided learning. Doing only the work assigned is not enough. Explore the Communications industry by meeting with other professionals, joining a professional network and reading about changes and improvements. Engage with others on social media. Question theories presented in lecture, and challenge thoughts you don't agree with. Join in class discussions and build quality relationships with your peers, as as they may be your colleagues one day. Oh, and enjoy Insomnia Cookies while you can!

What advice would you give to students in the Public Relations (MS) program who will soon graduate?

Don't underestimate the power of a strong social media presence. Show prospective employers that you've mastered the tools of the trade by building a personal brand on Twitter, LinkedIn and through blogging, if possible.
