About Xue Xia
Prior to BU
I am a senior student at Wenzhou-Kean University, a China-US cooperative, where she will earn a bachelor of science in finance in June 2017. In 2015, as a college student, representing China's youth, I attended Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings where she dialogued with APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) members and interviewed CEOs and political leaders. In 2016, I attended in the Global Faculty Development Symposium at the University of Tokyo, and I emceed SATW's Journey to Wenzhou. Recently, I am doing an off-site research internship for Wong MNC Center, an independent think tank focusing on the study of multinational corporations, foreign direct investment, and political economy in East Asia.
Why Journalism
Boston University has multifarious courses available for students to get enough exposure to different reporting forms and adapt to various journalistic skills. At BU, I can learn a broad range of interesting topics including human rights, intentional and investigative reporting. I may go beyond my undergraduate study in finance and learn in-depth coverage. There is nowhere to find a truly global classroom, except BU, where classmates have diverse experiences, and faculty members are active professional journalists.
Most Looking Forward To
I want to explore Boston, a dynamic center of journalism where sources are accessible, and an ideal place for intellectual mind and on-hands experiences. I desire to witness how journalism drives positive solutions, and how journalism functions differently in China from that in the US. Seeing the world by getting a big picture and receiving the world-class education is priceless value.
After Graduation
My short-term goal is to master comprehensive journalistic skills and become well-versed in different forms of journalism. I am passionate about investigating social issues. I was disturbed by the fact that unequal distribution of information escalates the social inequality. I am determined to eliminate the imbalances of information and improve the life of ordinary people.
I want to work in the North America for several years after finishing MS program, learning the discourse system of the West, and reporting China from a new perspective. Facing challenges in an exotic state will be a worthy experience.
I dream to work as an international correspondent for CCTV (China Central Television) News, which present the real China to the West, and endeavors to represent the voices of Asia and Africa. Having traveled to many countries, I dream to offer different discourses in the global community and bridge the gap of misunderstanding created by differing cultural discourses.
A Bit About Me
I have been called Bathroom Singer and Vitamin C Queen by my schoolmates for many years. Reasons:
- I love singing bel canto, especially when I am taking a shower because the resonance effect in the bathroom is comparable to the opera house, haha
- I love eating fruit very much and I always eat fruits during class breaks.
In addition, I have been playing the piano for more than fifteen years; I love playing badminton and volleyball.
Education
- Wenzhou-Kean University, B.S. in Finance
