Azarine Arinta

Prior to BU

I graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Universitas Gadjah Mada, a university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. After I graduated, I moved back to my hometown in Jakarta and worked as a Program Officer for an NGO called Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia. In 2015, I decided to pursue a career in an advertising industry and worked as a Social Media Specialist and Creative Content Specialist for a local digital advertising agency where I became interested in the use of social media and new media for the purpose of storytelling. Driven by my undergrad background in International Relations, I decided to go back to work for NGO because I want to utilize the power of social media for a good cause thus I worked as a Digital Communication Officer for Arts and Creative Industries in the British Council - a British organization specializing in international cultural and educational opportunities. I resigned from my job in the British Council after I got awarded a scholarship by Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education and has been doing freelance and voluntary social media works until my departure in August 2018 to Boston.

Why Emerging Media Studies

I grew up as an avid gamer thus technology and internet have always been fascinating to me. Despite my undergraduate background in International Relations, I found myself working professionally in the realm of emerging media for three years due to my fascination with the power of technology and internet.  I've witnessed and utilized the powerful force of stories,  words, and, visuals conveyed through the technology we called social media and new media and see how it can benefits the society - particularly the people in my country. Therefore, I choose to apply for the Emerging Media Studies in COM Program because I want to learn more about how to best utilize this fascinating technology for the greater good. In addition, I want to learn the effect and cause of emerging media to the society and learn the dynamic of this ever-changing industry.

Most Looking Forward To

Meeting new people from all parts of the world. One of the most charming things about BU and Boston is its' diversity and I'm very excited to meet new people! I'm also looking forward to bike around the city because I come from a city where biking is almost impossible.

After Graduation

Go back to Indonesia and will probably work for NGOs as their digital communication specialist and/or work for a local tech startup (the local tech startup scene is flourishing nicely in Indonesia these past few years). After two to four years will probably try to apply for a Ph.D. program somewhere in the United States (again).
