Boston University is proud of its historical roots as an institution founded by abolitionists that later served as home for Martin Luther King, Jr., and Howard Thurman. Today, COM is striving to support students, improve recruitment, and ensure equity in expectations.

We are supporting students with coaching, mentoring, and regular meetings with the dean. Students are serving on COM’s DEI Committee alongside faculty and staff, and we’ve created a DEI alumni advisory board. We are monitoring our progress through an annual survey to understand student opinions and feelings.

We are taking clear steps to improve our recruitment of diverse faculty and staff by applying best practices for inclusive recruiting. We also are working to ensure equity in our operations and among our team, whether that is in annual compensation or for service activities.

In 2019, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Women in Animation conducted a study and found that 31% of top animated films had women producers, and 3% had women film directors. Women of color represented less than 3% of animated films and television series. As audiences demand better representation in animated films and television shows, how are studios creating pipelines for better representation in front and behind the camera? What steps are people and organizations taking to break the barriers to have more inclusive storytelling in animation?
