The following is an excerpt from “29 Boston-area professors elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences,” featuring Professor Emerita of Sociology of Religion Nancy Ammerman, published in the Boston Globe on April 28, 2025.

Twenty Harvard University faculty members and six Massachusetts Institute of Technology professors were among nearly 250 newly elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the group announced last week.

Founded in 1780 by John Adams and John Hancock, the academy aims to honor accomplished leaders in a wide array of fields and “cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”
