GENERAL SUMMARY:  Under the direction of Department of Spiritual Care Program Manager, supports spiritual and emotional care of patients, visitors and colleagues of all/any faith traditions. Facilitates and advocates for objectives of Department of Spiritual Care. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to provide for overall care of patients and to foster spiritually welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Reports to Department of Spiritual Care Program Manager to triage, assess, and respond to requests for spiritual care intervention.

 

  1. Promotes comprehensive and interfaith spiritual care throughout hospital via direct care and through services provided by hospital chaplains, spiritual care volunteers and chaplain interns.

 

  1. Participates in hospital committees, rounds, and meetings as appropriate, requested, or assigned.

 

  1. Assists Department of Spiritual Care Program Manager in planning and facilitating events, memorials, in-service trainings, and continuing education programs.

 

  1. Rounds in assigned patient care areas to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and to increase the visibility of Department of Spiritual Care role in meeting the needs of patients, visitors, and NWH employees.

 

  1. Communicates and collaborates with all members of healthcare team in timely and sensitive manner to enhance patient care and discharge plan. Documents each visit through hospital electronic medical record in timely and sensitive manner.

 

  1. Facilitates team approach and offers supportive, nonjudgmental presence at staff or family meetings as appropriate, requested or assigned.

 

  1. Refers to local clergy or outpatient spiritual care as needed and as appropriate and in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.

 

  1. Exemplifies Newton-Wellesley Hospital CAREfirst Standards of Excellence.

 

  1. Complies with appropriate policies and procedures within Department of Spiritual Care in accordance with Newton-Wellesley Hospital expectations.

 

  1. Participates in disaster plan preparation and training.

 

  1. Reports to clinical unit manager or covering supervisor any emergent issues related to patient/family/employee care, safety and/or risk.

 

  1. Maintains hospital expectation of employee participation including mandatory competency and health screening requirements.

 

  1. Engages in continuing education in spiritual care/chaplaincy to remain current on changes and development in the field and to be familiar with spiritual care in the religious traditions most represented in the hospital community.

 

  1. Other duties as assigned
