PhD student La Ronda Barnes (’26) published in Homiletic: The Journal of the Academy of Homiletics
The following is an excerpt from Homiletic: The Journal of the Academy of Homiletics article “A Particular Oneing: Zilpha Elaw as a Model for a 21st Century Womanist Contemplative Homiletic” by PhD student La Ronda Barnes, published on December 2, 2024. Her article appears on page 95 of the issue.
In this article, I present nineteenth-century preacher Zilpha Elaw as a model for a twenty-first-century homiletic. I discuss particularity, as understood through deep interiority and contemplation, as the key to connecting with other beings. As preachers, we have the ability and the responsibility to model the need for and benefits of understanding and owning our particularities and to guide others in embracing their particularities in ways that affirm self and community. Thanks to the incomparable gifts of African American contemplative preachers, I believe that we can bridge innate differences and societally created divisions through a psychospiritual interiority that acknowledges and encourages communication in the spiritual realm.

Music Director, Part-Time, UCC: Portsmouth, NH
We are committed to building a dynamic music program, the foundation of which would be our iconic organ, our grand piano, our musical instruments and our faithful choir. A music director who comes with fresh ideas will find enthusiastic support for initiatives among the congregants. Our goal is to create a blended experience of traditional and contemporary music in our worship services. We believe in the power of music to transform our hearts and minds, and we are excited to partner with a director who joins us in that vision.
As a United Church of Christ congregation, North Church is a progressive Protestant congregation that is centered around the worship of God, service to the community, and fellowship among the congregation. Guided by our Christian values, we are an open and affirming church committed to advocating for justice, equality, and the dignity of all people. North Church's location in the central square of Portsmouth has long positioned us as a gathering place not only for worship services, weddings, and funerals, but as a friendly, welcoming place of worship for area visitors. Countless community events are held in our sanctuary each year, and our towering steeple serves as an iconic representation of the City. North Church recently celebrated its 350-year anniversary. We are focused on renewing and growing our congregation, welcoming new members from throughout the Seacoast area.
The current renovation of our North Church Sanctuary reflects the enthusiasm and determination of our congregation to move into the future. Through collaborative effort we reached consensus on a plan to address the needs of the church, a willingness to roll up our sleeves, make hard choices and work together to chart a course for the future. Our church is part of a vibrant musical community that extends from Portland through the Seacoast to Boston. Many local church musicians participate in that music community, enriching the music of their congregations. This connection to the larger music landscape fosters greater community engagement. It is our hope that a future music director would be engaged in these circles to enhance the music and outreach of North Church. It is our belief that by providing engaging and inclusive musical opportunities in worship and otherwise, we can share the love and joy of North Church with our broader community.

Life of Bishop Bennie D. Warner (’71) Honored in UM News
The following is an excerpt from the UM News article, "Bishop Warner remembered for humility in exile," published on November 25, 2024 by Heather Hahn. Click here to read the full article.
"After years as a pastor, he decided he needed a seminary education to continue. In 1968, he and his young family moved to Massachusetts. He attended United Methodist-related Boston University School of Theology, where he graduated with a master’s degree in theology after majoring in Christian social ethics.
Back in Liberia, he continued his dual path as teacher and preacher. He was serving as religion instructor, counselor and chaplain at the College of West Africa in Monrovia, when what was then the Liberia Central Conference elected him as bishop in 1973. Warner became his nation’s 25th vice president in 1977.
Three years later, the coup left him without either office in his homeland and in need of political asylum, which the U.S. government granted. As the military took over, Warner recalled being told that if he came back, 'There’s a machine gun with your name on it.'
With no episcopal assignment available in the U.S., Warner needed to begin United Methodist ministry again. In “Black Marks on White Paper,” Warner said that he heeded the advice of a friend who said upon his election as bishop and vice president: 'Don’t wear your jacket too tightly because it will be difficult to take it off.' With that guidance in mind, he said he wore his august positions loosely. 'So when they came off, I had no problem,' he said. After seeking God’s guidance, he began to see himself as a missionary to The United Methodist Church. Still, he continued to pray for the people of Liberia as coup eventually gave way to civil war."
