Biography
Jacey Greece, DSc, MPH, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) where she teaches courses in health behavior theory, intervention planning, health communications, and epidemiology. Her professional and research interests are rooted in healthy eating, food access and security, childhood obesity, community-based interventions, behavioral epidemiology, monitoring and surveillance, and program evaluation. She applies many field-based concepts to the classes she teaches.
Dr. Greece is currently the evaluator for multiple grants focused on provider training and education including for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [The Boston Sustainable Models for unhealthy Alcohol use ReducTion (B SMART) Program] and Health Resources and Services Administration (SAFEST Choice Learning Collaborative) as well as the evaluator for a few community-based programs focused on environmental approaches to hunger, opioid overdose, and mental health and COVID-19. Previously, Dr. Greece has evaluated a number of public health programs to help improve the quality of life of individuals and families in the United States, particularly families in underserved areas. Dr. Greece has conducted national and local evaluations for a variety of agencies including the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration and Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services (Project LAUNCH); Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Evaluation of New York City’s Health Bucks Obesity Prevention and Control Initiative, Integrated Vaccine Surveillance System); Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Evaluation of the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer for Children Program, the Community Eligibility Option Evaluation, and the Evaluation of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program); the Hood Foundation (Evaluation of the IMOVE Program); and, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (STD/HIV Prevention Training Program Evaluation). In addition, she has worked on a number of research projects for the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, on immediate and residual effects of intoxication on academic and occupational performance. Dr. Greece’s research interests have focused mainly on changing environmental conditions and access to services and resources to ultimately affect health behaviors of underserved populations of all ages.
Dr. Greece aims to create a classroom environment that provides opportunities for students to realize their full potential and acquire the skills needed to be successful public health practitioners and researchers. In her teaching, Dr. Greece emphasizes field-based consultancy and case method teaching as tools to teach technical competencies and relevant skills. Dr. Greece co-developed the PBT STEPS Framework for practice-based teaching, which has been widely published and employed in various classroom settings and disciplines and developed the Collaborate.Health website for practice-based teaching. Dr. Greece was awarded BUSPH’s Educational Innovation Award for creative approaches to teaching and has been awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for both introductory and seminar courses in social and behavioral sciences and epidemiology.
Professionally, Dr. Greece serves as a reviewer for Health Communication. She is an advisor to the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors Student Group and a member of the Board of Directors for Healthy Hearts for Life. She is a member of the American Public Health Association, American Dietetic Association, Society for Epidemiologic Research, and Massachusetts Public Health Association. Dr. Greece serves as a member on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Academic Public Health Research and Evaluation Workgroup for COVID-19 efforts.
A graduate of Tufts University, Dr. Greece received her Master of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Sciences and Doctorate of Science in Epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health.
