• Disability and Access Services suggests that faculty members should approach the student privately to discuss his/her concerns. They suggest steering the conversation away from the disability and focusing more on the observed behaviors and/or specific examples of their academic performance.
• Keep in mind that students are not obligated to disclose their disability, request accommodations or even use approved accommodations.
• Disability and Access Services can assist students by recommending testing, providing accommodations with appropriate documentation, or refer them to other BU resources.

Faculty are often the first people to come in contact with a student with a disability. Students may not know the process, have never had to self-advocate, or are nervous about how much personal information to share. When a student mentions a disability (physical, medical, or mental condition) please respect their process, treat they information they share as confidential and refer them to speak with Graduate Student Life Director Mary Murphy-Phillips at 617-358-1750 or mcmurph@bu.edu.

• If a student requests accommodations directly from you , please notify the student know that you cannot provide any accommodations without approval from Disability and Access Services or notification.
