Sunday School Teacher, Parish of the Good Shepherd: Waban, MA

Thank you for your interest in helping our children grow in the knowledge and love of God! The Parish of the Good Shepherd in Waban (Newton), Massachusetts, is looking for a Church School teacher to teach lower-elementary school children on Sunday mornings from September 2025-June 2026.

 The ideal candidate will be ready to plan and deliver simple, fun lessons that foster spiritual growth and community among our children, with support from volunteers and the Director of Christian Education (DCE) as needed. Our teaching is led by the lectionary and by the Montessori-based principles of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program.

 Stipend: $100/week (commensurate with experience) while classes are in session (early September – early June). Compensation is based on the expected 2.5 hours of Sunday commitment and an hour or less in preparation of a simple plan. Additional hours should be approved in advance and will be compensated at the same hourly rate.

 I. Qualifications

A. Enthusiasm for working with elementary school age children
B. Practicing Christian with basic understanding of worship and tradition
C. Reliable, responsible, and consistent presence, and commitment to complete a full school year of teaching
D. Successful completion of Massachusetts CORI background check and Safe Church training (to be handled and paid for by the Parish)

 II. Responsibilities

A. Arrive at the Parish by 9:15 a.m. each Sunday morning and stay until 11:45 a.m.
B. Prepare classroom and welcome students and parents.
C. From 9:45 a.m. to approximately 10:40/10:45 a.m., lead lessons and activities.
D. Bring children into the 10 a.m. Eucharist at approximately 10:40/10:45 a.m. and stay in the service until the end of the liturgy (typically around 11:15 a.m.)
E. Restore materials and tidy classroom as needed.

 III. Term

A. Teaching begins September 7, 2025. Position will extend through June 2026, with extension into future school years possible by mutual agreement of the teacher and the Parish.
