Associate Dean John Berthrong, 1946 – 2022

The Boston University School of Theology announces the passing in August 2022 of former academic dean John Hugh Berthrong, who served the School for 21 years as Associate Dean for Academic and Administrative Affairs and Associate Professor of Comparative Theology. Associate Dean Berthrong long pursued his passions for philosophy and religion at the University of Chicago and United Church of Canada in Toronto before coming to Boston University in 1988. He was a father, grandfather, spouse, avid traveler, and a dedicated volunteer with Poodle Rescue New England and Poodle Rescue Connecticut.

β€œDr. John Berthrong was a deeply loved member of the STH community,” says Dean G. Sujin Pak. β€œHe is remembered especially for his commitments to intercultural theology and interreligious studies, as well as the deep compassion with which he approached his scholarship, administrative work, and support of students. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family.”
