Important Travel Identification Requirement for Students

Students should always travel within Spain carrying their passport. This includes travel to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, as well as travel within mainland Spain, including on high-speed trains (AVE) and other forms of transportation.

For U.S. citizens studying in Spain, the U.S. passport is your primary and valid form of identification while in Europe. Transportation providers and authorities may request official identification when boarding transportation or during security checks.

Students who travel without their passport may face the following issues:

  • Being denied boarding on transportation such as buses, trains, or airplanes

  • Being unable to pass security checks at ports or airports

  • Being denied re-entry to mainland Spain (the peninsula) when returning from the Canary Islands or Balearic Islands

To avoid travel disruptions, students should carry their passport with them at all times when traveling, even for domestic trips within Spain.

We strongly recommend keeping your passport secure and protected during travel and considering carrying a photocopy or digital copy stored separately as a backup.
