Language Placement Test

If you are a non-BU student, or you have never taken a Spanish class at BU before, you must take the Language Placement Test. It will take you around 15-30 minutes to complete.

BU Language Placement Test

  • Create an account
  • Choose ‘Spanish’

Students: you must complete this test carefully, to the best of your ability— placement in the appropriate level of Spanish is integral to your academic experience abroad. It is important to note that the LPT  serves as a guide, but the on-site Spanish language instructors will have final say in assessing language level and placement in the appropriate class.

  • If you are enrolled in a Spanish class deemed too advanced for you, our language team will advise you to drop down a level in order to maximize your class performance.
  • If our instructors believe that you have enrolled in a level below your capabilities, you will be asked to move to the next Spanish class level so 1) you will not get bored in class (challenge yourself!) and 2) you will not be distracting or discouraging to other students.
  • If you are a native Spanish speaker, please contact dgannon@bu.edu or amaliapj@bu.edu. Native Spanish speakers should enroll in a 400-level class.
  • Taking a language/ literature class while studying abroad is a requirement of the BU Madrid program, no exceptions.

Send a screenshot or PDF copy of the results to your BUSA program manager. This placement will not only determine  the Spanish class in which you enroll, but also the electives you are eligible to take as well.

Questions? Unsure of the results? Don’t worry! Our Spanish language instructors are experts and will help you find the Spanish level that best suits you. In the meantime, we will stick to what the LPT recommends since it is very accurate.
