The Student Job Service is a free listing service offered to employers throughout the Greater Boston area. All hiring and compensation for work performed by students is handled directly between the student and the employer. The Student Job Service does not perform background checks on students applying for jobs. Employers may request references from students as necessary. Employer job listings are posted at the discretion of the Student Job Service.
As of January 1, 2023 the Massachusetts minimum wage is $15.00 per hour. Positions submitted for approval that are lower than $15.00 per hour will be increased to meet state minimum wage.
If you are interested in posting a Work-Study position, please consult the Work-Study procedures for the type of employer you are (on-campus, off-campus).
The Student Job Service offers two distinct categories of job opportunities to all eligible BU students:
Part-time Jobs
Long-term part-time positions and full-time summer jobs. Access is restricted to matriculated BU students.
Quick Jobs
Short-term jobs (one month or less). Referrals to these jobs are given only to BU students registered with the Quick Job Service.
For step by step instructions on how to complete the Job Posting Form view our Job Posting Guide.
The following procedures apply to positions filled from either board:
When a student calls about the job, discuss the qualifications and other details.
If the student seems like a good candidate (check references if you wish), offer him or her the job.
If the student accepts the job and you do not require additional help, remove the job listing online or contact us so that we can remove the job from the online job board.
We recommend that you keep the names and numbers of all students who respond to your posting, even after you have filled the position, in case of a last minute cancellation.
Pay rates for jobs are set exclusively by the employer, although you must at least meet the Massachusetts minimum wage of $15.00 per hour. Student Job Service staff can inform you of the current going rates for most jobs, but the final decision about what rate to advertise is entirely up to you.
Keep in mind that students usually select jobs with the highest posted rates. Your job, therefore, will be filled faster if it pays competitively.
Both employers and students are expected to adhere to the pay rate that is posted on the job listing. Any deviation must be agreed upon by both parties.
All payment for work done is made directly by the employer to the student, immediately upon completion of a job, and, whenever possible, in cash. Business employers should inform students if there will be a delay in payment and whether they will be paid by check. Even when a payroll process is involved, we expect that students will be paid within a reasonable time after completing the job.
