Offered on campus, online, or in a blended format, the Master of Science in Insurance Management at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) is designed for professionals who have earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. As a CPCU credential holder, you can achieve further distinction by complementing your demonstrated expertise in insurance issues with a mastery of forward-thinking management principles in accounting, finance, operations, and leadership. The CPCU designation serves as a waiver for two courses, enabling you to earn the degree by completing just 32 units.

Holders of the CPCU credential can earn the master’s degree by completing just eight courses.

Certificate-to-Degree Pathway

BU MET graduate certificate programs can serve as building blocks to a master’s degree. Students currently enrolled in a graduate certificate who are interested in transitioning into a master’s degree should contact their academic advisor to declare their interest in this pathway. A total of 32 units is required.

Students who are not choosing a concentration must complete four core courses and four general electives. Those choosing a concentration in Applied Business Analytics; Corporate Finance; Project, Program & Portfolio Management; or Supply Chain Management complete the core courses and applicable concentration courses as shown below.

Students must demonstrate achievement of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) credential to be eligible.

Degree requirements may vary for those students transferring units from previous coursework at Boston University or receiving course waivers due to professional designations.

With appropriate advanced planning, you can use program electives to satisfy up to two required courses in an Administrative Sciences graduate certificate program—leaving only two additional courses to be completed in order to receive a graduate-level certificate.

Master’s Thesis Option

(Two courses/8 units)

Students have the option to complete a master’s thesis in addition to the program’s eight course (32 unit) requirements. The thesis must be completed within 12 months and is available to master’s candidates who have completed at least five courses toward their degree and have a GPA of 3.7 or higher. Students are responsible for finding a thesis advisor and a principal reader within the department. The advisor must be a full-time faculty member; the principal reader may be a part-time faculty member with a doctorate. Permission must be obtained by the department.
