Values

We are committed to igniting and sustaining positive change that leads to health and wellbeing around the world. We strive for a respectful, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive community within our School of Public Health. We aim to promote justice, human rights, and equity within and across our local and global communities.


Strategy 1: Fostering a Thriving BUSPH Community

This strategy focuses on how we behave and operate within SPH (including values such as respect, inclusion, community and belonging), encompassing the notion of “Living Our Values”.

Goals
  1. Be a leading workplace for growth and learning
  2. Foster an environment of excellence and collaboration at SPH and BU both in person and online
  3. Create robust and inclusive communities of practice, teaching, and research
  4. Foster a diverse community of students, staff, and faculty that is reflective of the populations we serve
  5. Cultivate an environment that values open expression and exchange of ideas.

Tactics
  1. Recruit, support, and retain community members committed to the mission of the school
  2. Provide career growth opportunities for faculty and staff
  3. Implement student, staff and faculty onboarding and mentoring programs
  4. Conduct exit surveys for all departing faculty and staff
  5. Conduct periodic school survey of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and employers
  6. Hold events to engage and celebrate the SPH community
  7. Develop programs to engage and manifest BU’s “Living Our Values” initiative


Strategy 2: Empowering Our Future

This strategy focuses on how we can lead in public health educational excellence.

Goals
  1. Prepare the next generation of public health leaders and professionals
  2. Design and deliver relevant, innovative, and responsive educational programs and initiatives
  3. Equip faculty and educational staff with the best training, tools, and skills for success and impact
  4. Expand opportunities for lifelong public health training
  5. Develop new educational activities in partnership with SPH centers, programs and units, with other schools and colleges at BU and beyond

Tactics
  1. Enhance opportunities for both digital and in-person learning (online, executive and bespoke) throughout our educational program
  2. Collaborate with industry and non-traditional partners in educational programming
  3. Expand sources of support for predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees
  4. Implement novel training and educational evaluation and improvement plans
  5. Increase the number of educational collaborations between SPH, BMC, the other BU schools and colleges, and international universities/educational institutions
  6. Expand the pipeline of undergraduate students into our program


Strategy 3: Generating Scholarship for Impact

This strategy focuses on our research and scholarship at SPH.

Goals
  1. Generate new knowledge to address real-world problems
  2. Sustain an innovative research and scholarship ecosystem that supports convergent work
  3. Communicate research and scholarship both within and beyond the academy
  4. Translate findings into the development of tools, programs, and policies that benefit communities
  5. Facilitate opportunities for convergent research collaboration with other schools and centers locally, nationally and internationally

Tactics
  1. Produce high quality scientific outputs (papers, briefs, etc.)
  2. urture opportunities that seed innovative faculty scholarship with partners across BU, nationally and internationally
  3. Promote and encourage convergent and interdisciplinary research
  4. Facilitate research collaborations with industry and non-traditional partners
  5. Increase and diversify the number of research funders
  6. Enhance student and staff engagement in research and scholarship


Strategy 4: Driving Ideas into Action for the Health of All

This strategy focuses on SPH’s external engagement and impact in the world and non-academic public health.

Goals
  1. Promote the translation of science into practice
  2. Build and strengthen partnerships with communities locally, nationally, and globally that result in positive impact
  3. Improve the reach of public health with a commitment to social justice
  4. Create opportunities for student involvement in public health advocacy and applied learning

Tactics
  1. Expand practice-based teaching and learning
  2. Execute a comprehensive SPH strategy for optimizing ideas into action
  3. Partner with BU to create SPH department-led service activities aligned with our mission
  4. Develop and offer training for faculty, staff, and students on how to best engage with communities and translate research to action
  5. Engagement and embedded work in community and neighborhood practices
  6. Engage with policy makers in the search for public health solutions
  7. Establish advisory boards on certain topics that can work with multiple research teams
  8. Create development pipeline and private sector partnerships to expand robust public health practice experiences


Strategy 5: Shaping Public Health Discourse

This strategy focuses on how SPH can be seen as a leader in public health thinking and communication. This includes the communication of our ideas and work, as well as the convening of public health leaders and the public to address the most pressing topics in public health.

Goals
  1. Drive critical public health conversations locally, national, and globally
  2. Lead development of innovative approaches to pedagogy and learning models
  3. Strengthen science communication skills within the SPH community
  4. Engage with media to explore and communicate latest research and scholarship
  5. Provide a forum for discussion of cutting-edge public health issues and support the free expression of ideas

Tactics
  1. Convene internal and external thought leaders through in person and online platforms
  2. Engage communities for co-development of thought leadership
  3. Regularly train faculty, staff, and students in media relations, public discourse, and social media
  4. Hold convergent dialogues with other BU schools and centers
  5. Execute department-based communication plans that align with SPH communication plan

This strategy focuses on how SPH promotes operational excellence and financial stability.

Goals
  1. Ensure BUSPH is positioned for long-term financial stability
  2. Aim for excellent operational efficiency
  3. Strengthen connections with our growing population of outstanding alumni
  4. Enhance diversification of revenue streams
  5. Develop and implement a strong philanthropic and partnership engagement plan

Tactics
  1. Develop and enhance donor and revenue base
  2. Enhance DAB strength and giving
  3. Continue to execute comprehensive alumni engagement plan
  4. Build culture of giving for students, faculty, and staff
  5. Review structure and process of core operations
  6. Explore new models of revenue
