BU Today: Jorge Delva to Step Down as Dean & Join BUSSW Faculty

After the recent news that Jorge Delva (BSW, MSW, PhD) will end his time as Dean at BU School of Social Work, BU Today celebrated Delva’s history at the school and as a social worker. From his surprising beginnings as an engineering student to how he has helped BUSSW elevate the field of social work, the article celebrates his many accomplishments over the past five years and beyond.

quotation markHis successor, he says, will implement BU School of Social Work’s new strategic plan, whose completion Delva counts among his proudest achievements as dean. Its ‘core purpose is to dismantle injustice and liberate possibilities,’ he says. ‘Our goal is “to be a global model in social economic, racial, gender, and climate justice transformation.” And I believe the school is well on its way to achieving that.’

The plan builds on the school’s addressing of racial injustices that were magnified through the pandemic, he says. For example, SSW researchers have probed such topics as how parents can prepare their children for racial discrimination and anti-Asian discrimination during the pandemic, in the wake of former president Donald Trump calling COVID-19 ‘the China virus.’”
