Many members of our Medical Campus community are passionate about working with folks who are homeless and experiencing poverty — we know this from the outpouring of support we see each year for events like the Boston Homeless Census. The Activist Lab is excited to offer a new way for our academic community to get involved in these issues in our own backyard. Saint Francis House is a nonprofit organization in Boston that provides refuge and pathways to stability for adults experiencing homelessness and poverty. They transform lives using a holistic approach to understanding and addressing behavioral health, housing, and employment needs. HER and OASIS are two of the many programs they offer that take place right next door to the Medical Campus on Saturdays and are in need of volunteers.
HER (Health. Empowerment. Resources) provides a safe women-centered space to provide medical, behavioral health, and case management appointments as well as fun rotating activities. Every Saturday from 7 AM to 11 AM, volunteers support the staff with the appointments and engage with the patients, who are experiencing varying health, mental health, and substance use issues.
OASIS Health Clinic serves people of color, immigrants, and underserved populations to provide medical, behavioral health, and case management appointments as well as fun rotating activities. Every Saturday from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM, volunteers support and engage with patients of varying health and learn how health care agency of this nature operates. Trained volunteers are welcome to lead their own educational or recreational activity.
To volunteer, you must attend an orientation session. The Activist Lab Life on Albany Committee has partnered with Saint Francis House to make it a little easier for our community to participate by hosting a training session here at SPH.
