SPH at APHA.
Dean Sandro Galea will kick off the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and Expo, held this year in Philadelphia, Pa. on November 2-6.
Galea and Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will each deliver keynote remarks at the Opening General Session on November 3, setting the tone for this year’s theme, “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health.”
Galea’s comments will be a “call to arms” for the 13,000 public health professionals in attendance, to take on barriers such as political obstinacy, entrenched racism and inequality, and a fundamental misunderstanding of the way America approaches health.
During the five-day APHA gathering, over 70 faculty, staff, students, and recent graduates from the Boston University School of Public Health will present, covering research on everything from Kenyan pharmaceutical trials to noise pollution, from transgender health to college binge drinking, from falls in nursing homes to the experiences of black mothers in Boston. Find times and abstracts for all SPH-affiliated presentations here.
Members of the SPH community will also present on some of the ways that the school has become a leader in public health education. Lisa Sullivan, associate dean for education and professor of biostatistics, will co-present “Teaching Public Health: Best Practices” on Sunday, November 3. On Tuesday, November 5, Sullivan will also present “Engaging Alumni to Improve and Inform Public Health Curricula and Continuing Education Opportunities Using Qualitative Evaluation Methods” with Anneke Demmink, Jacey Greece, and Amanda Velez, and “Storytelling Sparks a School-Wide Conversation about Diversity and Inclusion” with Adriana Black, Yvette Cozier, Candice Belanoff, and Dean Galea.
On Monday, November 4, Harold Cox, associate dean for public health practice and associate professor of community health sciences, will present on SPH’s Activist Lab, and how it fosters collaborations between the school and community partners, teaches advocacy skills, and supports students working with local organizations to help meet the needs of SPH’s neighbors.
On the evening of Monday, November 4, SPH will host an Alumni & Friends Reception in conjunction with APHA. At the event, Dean Galea will give remarks and present the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award to Bahby Banks (SPH’05), CEO of Pillar Consulting. Register for the reception here.
During the entire APHA Meeting and Expo, attendees can also stop by the BUSPH booth to meet with current faculty and staff.
