Funding Outside BU.
There are many opportunities for scholarships outside of BU that we encourage students to explore. The scholarships below are very common and relevant to Public Health students, and should be considered by all eligible applicants. Finding funding is an ongoing process, and all students, new and continuing, should regularly apply for scholarship opportunities that will help fund their Public Health education.

- The Draper FellowshipDraper supports graduate students in pursuit of both MS and PhD degrees in engineering, physics, and applied math. Draper Fellowship recipients work on research project jointly selected by and of interest to their academic (faculty) advisors at their institutions, and their Draper supervisor, who is a member of their thesis committee. Since the 1970s, Draper has supported more than 1,200 Draper Fellows from both civilian and military backgrounds, and who are excelling all over the world in technical, corporate, government, academia and entrepreneurship sectors. Draper is continuing its commitment to the next generation of leaders in the sciences and technology by supporting 60 Draper Fellows who are pursuing MS and PhD degrees at 11 universities, and by joining the Hertz Foundation to launch the Hertz-Draper Fellowship with 2 current Hertz-Draper Fellows.

- Common Knowledge Scholarship FoundationScholarship competitions consist of one or more quizzes with topics ranging from general “common knowledge” to specific academic subjects, books, websites, and even movies.
- BUMC Student Financial Services BUMC’s SFS is continually seeking scholarship, loan and other opportunities to help make obtaining your degree more affordable.
External Funding Sources
- A.C.T.I.O.N. GrantThis is an opportunity for all students in public health and related disciplines on campus to design grassroots advocacy projects. The top submission will be granted $500 and should be implemented during National Public Health Week.
- Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship ProgramThe Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries in financial need. The foundation gives priority consideration to students completing masters-level coursework, but will also consider applications for doctoral programs
- Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program. Each scholarship is worth $5,000.
- Dr. Alma S. Adams ScholarshipsAwards will be granted on a competitive basis for the following: a) a record of commitment to community service on behalf of an underserved community, preferably related to tobacco prevention and/or control and b) the best use of the visual arts, media, creative writing or other creative endeavor to convey culturally appropriate health messages aimed at raising awareness of tobacco’s harmful impact.
- Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement FoundationThe Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation awards merit and financial need graduate scholarships. Please visit their website for eligibility details.
- American Association on Health and Disability ScholarshipThe AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability is awarded annually to a deserving student with a disability who is pursuing undergraduate/graduate studies in an accredited university related to the health and disability, to include, but not limited to public health, health promotion, disability studies, disability research, and majors that will impact quality of life of persons with disabilities.
- APHA Get Ready ScholarshipThe Get Ready Scholarship, offered in conjunction with APHA’s Get Ready campaign, is designed to encourage high school, college, and graduate students to focus on the importance of emergency preparedness.
- Cancer for College ScholarshipMust be a cancer patient/cancer survivor. Perpetual scholarship recipients must be willing to attend regional events associated with scholarship awarded and available for selected interviews and or media coverage.
- Cathy L. Brock ScholarshipThe Cathy L. Brock Memorial Scholarship recognizes graduate student leaders, who represent ethnically diverse cultural backgrounds, and is named in memory of Cathy L. Brock, Director of Operations for the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Research and Educational Trust.
- Cooley Masters ScholarshipThe award is open to a master’s level student who is currently enrolled in a health education program at an accredited college/university in the United States or a U.S. territory. To be eligible, the applicant must have a minimum current overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- The Cory L. Richards Memorial ScholarshipApplicants applying to the Cory L. Richards Memorial Scholarship Program must be entering or currently enrolled full-time in an accredited graduate-level program for the entire upcoming academic year and be pursuing an advanced degree (either Masters or Doctoral) in Public Policy or Public Health.
- CSHEMA ScholarshipThe Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association offers a $2,000 scholarship (and a waiver to attend the CSHEMA annual conference) to encourage the study of environmental and occupational health, safety, and related disciplines.
- Daniel B. Goldburg ScholarshipThe 2014 Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship of $11,000 is available to a full-time graduate student who is pursuing an advanced degree preparing for a career in state or local government finance.
- David N. Kershaw AwardThe David N. Kershaw Award and Prize is offered every other year if a suitable recipient is identified. The award was established to honor persons who, at under the age of 40, have made a distinguished contribution to the field of public policy analysis and management.
- Diversified Investment Advisors Leaders in Healthcare ScholarshipAvailable to first- and second-year graduate students who are pursuing degrees in health care administration or in a comparable degree program (i.e., MBA, MPH, MHA, MPA, MSN, or BSN). Individuals must demonstrate financial need and a commitment to community service, and excel academically (minimum 3.0 GPA).
- Failure to Promise Essay ContestContestants must be high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate-level college students with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, pursuing or planning to pursue a degree at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.
- Elliot C. Roberts ScholarshipThe Elliott C. Roberts Scholarship recognizes graduate student leaders who represent ethnically diverse cultural backgrounds and is named in honor of Elliott C. Roberts, Sr., one of the nation’s leading public hospital administrators. The scholarship is available to first and second year graduate students who are pursuing degrees in healthcare administration or comparable degree program (i.e., MBA, MPH, MHA, MPA, MSN or BSN).
- Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student ScholarshipOffered annually, the Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program.
- Gates Mellenium Scholars ProgamThe Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States.
- Giva Semi-Annual Student Scholarship Giva’s Corporate Student Scholarship and Worldwide Community Ambassador Award is for anyone attending a college or university worldwide. This scholarship grant is aimed at assisting undergraduate or graduate students further their education as well as expand their social responsibility and community service footprint in the world.
- Humane Studies FellowshipThe Humane Studies Fellowship is a non-residency fellowship program that awards up to $15,000 per year. The fellowship is open to current or prospective full-time graduate students from accredited universities anywhere in the world whose research interests are related to ideas of a free society.
- The Iris -Samuel Rothman ScholarshipThis scholarship is in honor of a promising young man who died at age 22. To be eligible you must be a young man who has lost his mother AND father (both). Young men who have lost their mother AND do not have a father available to them are also eligible.
- JCC Association Graduate ScholarshipThe Scholarship Program provides financial aid for students to use towards a master’s degree that will lead to or enhance professional careers in the Jewish Community Center movement.
- The Leopold Schepp Foundation ScholarshipThe Foundation grants approximately 200 individual awards each year to both full time undergraduate students enrolled in four year bachelor programs and to full time graduate students. Awards up to $8,500
- Luce Scholars ProgramThe Luce Scholars Program provides a year-long internships in Asia. Scholarships are awarded to seniors, graduate students, and alumni under the age of 30 who are citizens of the United States with clearly defined career interests. The scholarship is open to applicants in any field of study. Students must be nominated by the Boston University liaison, Jeffrey Berg.
- National Hispanic Health Professional Student ScholarshipThe Scholarship is open to any student enrolled full time in an accredited graduate program in dental, medical, public health, policy, physician assistant, pharmacy, or podiatry students and BSN or graduate students in nursing school. Applicants are not required to be Hispanic; an affinity for the health of Hispanic communities and an interest in participating in NHHF Scholars Alumni activities is required.
- National Science Foundation Graduate Research FellowshipsThe National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships are three-year full fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in the areas of science, mathematics, and engineering.
- NEHA ScholarshipThe purpose of the NEHA/AAS Scholarship program is to encourage early commitment by students to a career in environmental health and to stimulate past and present graduates to pursue post graduate studies in environmental health sciences and/or public health.
- Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation AwardThe Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation for low-income women and children will offer five Education Support Awards of up to $5000 each to assist low-income women with children who are pursuing education or training.
- The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships For New AmericansThe Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship will be awarded to 30 New Americans, who will receive awards up to $25,000. To be eligible you must be a New American (a green card holder or naturalized citizen if born abroad; a child of naturalized citizens if born in this country). You must be a college senior or have a bachelor’s degree.
- Payne International Development Graduate FellowshipThe USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to attract outstanding young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
- Pedro Zamora Public Policy FellowshipThe Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship is open to young professionals, undergraduate and graduate students who seek experience in HIV-related public policy and government affairs. You must have strong research, writing and organizational skills and a willingness to work in a professional office.
- The Point Foundation LGBTQ Scholarship FundThe Point Foundation empowers promising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society.
- Shine Bright ScholarshipThe Shine Bright Eve’s Addiction Scholarship is open to high school seniors and any student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at any accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must complete a 500 word essay on “How can the Web give a company a competitive advantage”.
- SuperCollege ScholarshipThe SuperCollege Scholarship is an award that is eligible to all students — high school, college, grad or adult — who are currently in college or plan to start. You can use the scholarship to pay for tuition, books, computers, room and board or any education-related expense.
- The Switzer Environmental Fellowship ProgramThe Switzer Fellowship Program offers one-year of Fellowships to highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies and career goals are directed toward environmental improvement and who clearly demonstrate leadership in their field.
- TruFit Good Citizens ScholarshipTruFit Good Citizen Scholarship is open to students whose volunteer efforts made a difference in their communities. The scholarship awards $50,000 annually to deserving high school seniors and current students across the country who are attending or have been accepted to a federally accredited four-year college, university or graduate program and who are active in community service.
- Tylenol Future Care ScholarshipFor over 20 years, the makers of TYLENOL® have supported students pursuing degrees in healthcare by offering the TYLENOL® Future Care Scholarship. A total of $250,000 is awarded each year to forty exceptional students who demonstrate a balance of academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement.
- William E. Simon Fellowship for Noble PurposeThe Simon Fellowship is awarded to those graduating college seniors who have demonstrated passion, dedication, a high capacity for self-direction, and originality in pursuit of a goal that will strengthen civil society.
- World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program The World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program and Fellowship Program provide opportunities for graduate studies leading to a masters degree in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from the World Bank member countries.
