The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to announce that Debashis Ghosh, Ph.D. will be the recipient of the 2025 L. Adrienne Cupples Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service in Biostatistics.

Abstract:  With artificial intelligence entering virtually every sphere of society, it raises a slew of challenges, issues and opportunities, and understanding the role of statisticians in this disruption. We will discuss various facets of AI and describe potential ways in which statistical viewpoints can advance knowledge and understanding in this area. In addition, we will describe approaches to incorporating AI tools in training students.
Bio:  Debashis Ghosh is Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He previously served as Chair for 10 years. He was previously a faculty member at Penn State University and the University of Michigan. His research interests are in machine learning methods, causal inference and their application to a wide variety of problems in biostatistics and bioinformatics. His domain areas of applications have included cancer, pediatric autoimmune diseases and more recently, healthy aging. He has over 300 publications in the scientific and statistical literature and has received many recognitions for his work, including awards/fellowships from Harvard School of Public Health, the American Public Health Association, the American Statistical Association, and Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He previously served as the Co-Editor of the journal Biometrics.

Purpose of the Award 

This annual award recognizes a biostatistician whose academic achievements reflect the contributions to teaching, research, and service exemplified by Professor L. Adrienne Cupples. Dr. Cupples joined the faculty at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) in 1981 and later served as founding Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Co-Executive Director of the Graduate Program in Biostatistics. During her tenure at BUSPH, she advanced the field of biostatistics through extensive publications in major journals and book chapters on collaborative and methodological research, development and effective teaching of a wide range of biostatistics courses, and mentorship of numerous graduate students and faculty.
