Modern Slavery
GHI and Student Global health groups will convene a town hall meeting: slavery in the 21st century: ABOLITION in OUr time.
The Town Hall Meeting will educate and empower the Boston University community and the city of Boston regarding the estimated 27 million people enslaved around the world. Slavery occurs on all six continents including a CIA estimated 14,500-17,000 individuals are brought to the United States every year. Slavery affects our daily lives because it is part of the global economy. The clothing, coffee, and chocolate industries are just a few that enslave and traffic human beings throughout the world.
The Town Hall Meeting will include a panel discussion focusing on exploitation of vulnerable populations in the form of slavery. Following the panel will be a question and answer session and an action fair.
The free event is open to the public and is an opportunity not only to educate but also to empower our community to act. The Global Health Initiative at Boston University, Rotaract at BU School of Public Health, the BU Student Global Health Organization, Physicians for Human Rights and the Public Health Alliance for Minorities invite you to come and participate in a discussion that affects each of us in our daily lives.
