Sherry Cohen (SSW’88) and Daniel Mango (SSW’20) Honored with NASW-MA’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ and ‘Future of Social Work’ Awards

MSW student Daniel Mango (SSW’20) and alum Sherry Cohen (SSW’88) will be honored by the National Association of Social Workers Massachusetts Chapter (NASW-MA) at its 47th Annual Awards Celebration.
Mango receives the Future of Social Work Award, recognizing a student who has demonstrated excellence in a graduate social work program. A second-year dual degree student at Wheelock College of Education & Human Development and the School of Social Work, Mango is a Clinical Practice major minoring in Macro Practice. His long-term goal: to become a school principal. Once he steps into the role, his plan is to increase the representation of African-American male teachers, who Mango says make up just 2% of the teaching workforce in the United States.
Cohen receives the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing a social worker who has made outstanding contributions in the field throughout their career. A Newton, Mass.-based clinician who currently operates a private practice in psychotherapy, Cohen earned her MSW at BUSSW in 1988. She previously worked as a teacher, administrator and clinical social worker in a variety of treatment programs and schools, and was an adjunct faculty member at Lesley University.
Cohen has been Co-Chair of NASW-MA’s Symposium Planning Committee for more than a decade. In this role, she is responsible for creating the biannual program of workshops, learning and networking opportunities. It is also through the Committee that Cohen met BUSSW Clinical Associate Professor Ashley Davis, who nominated Cohen for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
According to Davis, “Sherry has been the leader behind every Symposium. She is inclusive, dynamic and decisive, and she is passionate about lifelong learning and professional development. She deserves to be recognized by all who benefit from her steadfast commitment to NASW and this biennial event, and I am thrilled for her.”
NASW-MA will recognize Cohen, Mango and five other awardees at its Award Celebration Dinner, which kicks off the Social Work Symposium, a two-day conference offering networking and educational opportunities.
