Professor Renée Spencer shared her presentation, Mentoring in the Real World: How Social Ecologies Influence Mentor-Youth Relationships, as a keynote address at the Mentoring Short Course Conference, hosted by the European Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, October 7-8.

The conference connects state-of-the-art research results and mentoring practices with this year’s theme of innovations in mentoring for social inclusion.

Featuring leading experts from Europe and the US, the conversations centered on program models, challenges and innovative solutions. During the two-day event, scholars and practitioners examined new innovations in the field, such as mentoring and prevention science, cultural competencies and the integration of youth-initiated mentoring in education.

Spencer specializes in the study of relational processes at work in youth mentoring and innovative approaches to mentoring for special populations of young people, including foster care and military-connected youth. An active member on a number of national boards, she has published more than 50 articles and book chapters, and received major research grants from sources such as the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education and the William T. Grant Foundation.
