Daniel Jacobson López, assistant professor at Boston University School of Social Work, will be a visiting fellow in the Research Education Institute for Diversity Scholars (REIDS) at the Yale School of Public Health’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA). The highly competitive fellowship is designed to support racial and ethnic minority scholars who are dedicated to reducing HIV inequities in communities of color.

Jacobson López is an expert in trauma and sexual violence against LGBTQ+ people of color. His research focuses on how possessing multiple marginalized identities affects the ways that socio-political institutions and systems engage with gay Latino and/or Black sexual assault survivors and the services provided to them. He has also recently conducted research on the effects of COVID-19 on people living with HIV/AIDS.

Clinical Professor Lenette Azzi-Lessing, chair of BUSSW’s Macro Practice Department, says Jacobson López’s selection for the fellowship reflects his commitment and leadership in promoting social justice for marginalized groups and individuals.

A tenure-track faculty member at BUSSW, Jacobson López was previously a federally funded postdoctoral associate at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health and its first Latinx PhD graduate. He also founded the University’s first Latinx graduate student group, was a CEED diversity scholar for the Institute for Clinical Research Education and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and was the inaugural chair of diversity and inclusion for the postdoctoral association. At his MSW alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, Jacobson López was recognized for his leadership and advocacy for Black and Latino students on campus by the Black Men at Penn organization and the Center for Hispanic Excellence.

Jacobson López is a certified sexual assault counselor, a licensed clinical social worker, and an anti-bias facilitator with the Anti-Defamation League.
