At this year’s Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health, Michael Curry, Esq., president and CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, delivered a powerful presentation on the enduring inequities in health care—both locally and nationally. Speaking to an engaged audience, Curry traced the historical roots of these disparities, outlined Massachusetts’ efforts to close gaps in health outcomes, and warned of the risks posed by recent federal policy changes.

Curry also introduced two major initiatives shaping the future of health equity in the Commonwealth. He highlighted the Health Equity Compact, a coalition of more than 85 leaders of color working to advance a statewide health equity agenda. Additionally, he discussed the nation’s first primary care association-based Institute for Health Equity Research, Evaluation & Policy which is focused on driving emancipatory research that centers the experiences and needs of historically marginalized communities.

Boston University President Dr. Melissa Gilliam shared welcoming remarks, setting the tone for an evening of thought-provoking discussion. After Curry’s lecture, Prof. Dolores Acevedo-Garcia, director of the Institute for Equity in Child Opportunity & Healthy Development (IECOHD) at BU School of Social Work, joined him on stage for a moderated conversation and audience Q&A, further exploring how academic research, community leadership, and policy advocacy can work together to promote health equity for all.
