Prof. Dolores Acevedo-Garcia Named Faculty Fellow of BU Computing & Data Sciences

Dr. Dolores Acevedo-Garcia, professor at BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) and director of its Institute for Equity in Child Opportunity & Healthy Development (IECOHD), has been named a fellow of Boston University’s Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS).
In a recent press release, CDS Associate Provost Azer Bestavros said, “We are honored to welcome Dolores and [Michael Alan Chang] to BU and the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences. [Dolores’s] expertise in using data-driven approaches to promote the well-being of all children … aligns with CDS’s commitment to pursuing impactful, multidisciplinary Data Science.”
The press release adds:
“The CDS Faculty Fellows Program is designed to develop and nurture a strong community of exceptional faculty members who pursue novel computational and data-driven research with strong potential for long-term impact. Since its launch in 2016 under the auspices of the Data Science Initiative (a precursor to CDS), the program has supported 20 fellows whose research spans computational linguistics, cognitive science, algorithmic fairness, biomedical imaging, computer vision, machine learning, AI, and more. Acevedo-Garcia and Chang now join this distinguished group.”
Acevedo-Garcia joined BUSSW in January 2025, bringing with her the robust team of researchers and staff that make up IECOHD. A renowned researcher, her work focuses on the social determinants of racial/ethnic inequities in health, the social policies that shape inequities in those areas, and the well-being of children with special needs. Data science is deeply embedded in this work, which includes her role as project director for diversitydatakids.org, a research program and database monitoring the state of equity in child health and well-being, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
