BUSSW faculty and Social Workers Testify on behalf of The SUPER Act

Super Act Social Worker Support

Recently, Prof. Jorge Delva from BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) and social workers across the state of Massachusetts testified on behalf of The SUPER Act (S.218/H.1423).

The SUPER Act is focused on strengthening the social work field by removing barriers to entry, incentivizing professionals in the field, and building a more robust workforce that meets the complex needs of the communities they serve.

The bill includes these three components:

  1. Instituting in law a paid placement program for MSW students in Massachusetts
  2. Changes to the exam requirement at the LCSW level of Licensure
  3. Continuing education credits for LICSW’s for providing supervision

The SUPER Act will help bring broader perspectives and advocacy to social work in Massachusetts and allow field professionals to provide effective and equitable solutions to complex community needs. BUSSW professor and BRIDGE Program Co-Director Jorge Delva affirms the quality of education MSW students receive is comprehensive and equips them to serve their communities without the added burden of mandatory exams.

“The nature of the problems our clients, families, communities experience are so incredibly complex that I can assure you that it is impossible for a multiple-choice exam to validly and reliably assess the skills, knowledge, and grit that social workers need to most effectively and efficiently help clients … Social work students in our state receive an intensive, rigorous, high-quality education … Removing the LCSW exam requirement is a necessary and urgent first step in getting more social workers into the field.”
