Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) Assistant Professor Darien Williams will join BU faculty experts at Meeting This Moment: State and Federal Legal Landscape After Skrmetti and Mahmoud, a panel discussion exploring SCOTUS rulings that ban healthcare for transgender youth in Tennessee and LGBTQIA+ youth and K_12 curriculum, respectively.

Sponsored by the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff, the event will do a deep dive into this past June’s SCOTUS rulings in US v. Skrmetti, which upheld Tennessee’s ban on health care for transgender youth; and Mahmoud v. Taylor which upheld parents’ First Amendment rights to opt their children out of K-12 curriculum where five books with LGBTQIA+ content were at the center of the case.

The event will also highlight which cases are on the horizon, including Chiles v. Salazar, an upcoming case out of Colorado that involves a First Amendment challenge to a ban on conversion therapy by licensed professionals. All three cases have profound implications for the well-being of LGBTQIA+ people and the community.

In addition to Prof. Williams, panelists include:

  • Aziza Ahmed, Professor of Law and N. Neal Pike Scholar
  • Linda C. McLain, Robert Kent Professor of Law
  • Carl G. Streed, Associate Professor of Medicine/GIM; Research Director, GenderCare Center of BMC
  • Michael Ulrich, Associate Professor at School of Public Health and School of Law

The event is open to all BU faculty, staff, and students.
