The Boston University School of Social Work Alumni Association is pleased to announce the 2010 Alumni Association Award recipients. The Association has selected Kendall Snow (’64) for Outstanding Career in Social Work; Guy Apollon (’96) and Myrtise Kretsedemas (’97) as joint recipients for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Social Work; Carly Burton for the Hubie Jones Urban Service Award; and Seth Pritikin, the School’s analyst/consultant, for Outstanding Contributions to the School of Social Work.
“The School’s Annual Alumni Association Awards showcase the outstanding work of our alumni, faculty, and staff,” said Associate Dean Ken Schulman. “We take great pride in the accomplishments of those honored and find the many important contributions of the recipients to be inspiring.”
In conjunction with Boston University’s alumni weekend, the Alumni Association Award Ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 30 in the Faculty/Staff Dining Room at the George Sherman Union (775 Commonwealth Avenue).
Devoted to social work for over 40 years, Kendall Snow is actively involved in advocating for the Manchester community by educating members and legislators on behalf of the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester (N.H.). Currently vice president of community relations, Snow joined the Center in 1966 and has headed multiple initiatives for the Center, including the Center’s Development Initiative, which has built an endowment worth over one million dollars.
Guy Apollon and Myrtise Kretsedemas are both recognized for their work with Boston’s Haitian community. In early 2010, Apollon led a group of mental health and other professionals to Haiti to help in rebuilding efforts after the nation’s January 2010 earthquake. Dedicating much of his career to serving the greater Boston’s Haitian community, Apollon is program director at Catholic Charities’ Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester. Using his background as a trained physician in Haiti, he works to secure the Boston Haitian community access to health and social services.
A consultant for MK Consulting and clinical director at Priority Professional Care, Kretsedemas joined the HMH Network as co-chair of their Organizational Development Committee. With thirteen years of clinical and macro experience in the field, she provides leadership, administrative oversight, program development, and assists the Network with grant writing and fundraising.
In recognition of Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones, the Hubie Jones Urban Service Award honors a graduate who actively pursues the urban mission and goals of the School of Social Work. Carly Burton is the director of service development for the Massachusetts Council on Human Service Providers, where she works to improve the quality of services offered to vulnerable populations through in-person training and online education programs. Previous to this position, Burton was deputy director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition. A School of Social Work adjunct professor here, Burton developed the International Social Welfare Policy course.
Seth Pritikin, the School’s information technology analyst and consultant, will be honored for his contribution to the School of Social Work. As the SSW “go-to person,” Pritikin provides support and troubleshooting for all web, database, operations and information systems issues. Noted for his patience and sense of humor in answering any question, he is a valued member of the School’s staff and community.
