6/11 – 6/14: Profs. López & McLaughlin Share Their Expertise at IASWG Symposium

Improving practitioners’ understanding of effective group social work is essential for creating supportive networks, empowering communities and individuals, and promoting social change. To help improve social work with groups internationally, Profs. Donna McLaughlin and Luz López from BU School of Social Work will present at the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) Symposium at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain. This year’s symposium is entitled “Breaking Barriers: Group Work and Social Justice.”
McLaughlin and López will present two sessions at this event that will share innovative strategies in group work education.
“Group Work Education Today: Innovative Strategies for an Inclusive Course Curriculum for Anti-oppressive Practice”
This presentation will discuss how to develop a contemporary social group work curriculum that incorporates anti-oppressive practices. It will highlight the challenges and successes in creating inclusive courses.

“Where, When and How Students Learn about Social Work with Groups: An Inquiry by the IASWG Commission on Group Work in Social Work Education”
This workshop will explore the global methods and scope of teaching social work with groups. Presenters will include diverse examples from IASWG Commission members and encourage participants to expand their research on group work education internationally. This presentation is this year’s Roselle Kurland Memorial Invitational.
