Addressing the negative trends in a culture, alongside its successes, can help prevent social and public health crises. Prof. Hyeouk Chris Hahm from BU School of Social Work focuses on this topic as the moderator for the panel “The City Talks: Korean Standards and Stigmas,” part of the “Hallyu! The Korean Wave” exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston. The exhibit celebrates the global rise and prevalence of Korean pop culture, while the panel will also discuss how Korean communities are challenging their culture’s stigmas and taboos around mental health. Speakers include Boston-based experts and entrepreneurs including Prof. Josephine M. Kim from Harvard University, Gloria Yoonseung Lee from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Joon Son, owner of the restaurant chain KimchiPapi Kitchen.

“The City Talks” series features experts who are familiar with themes highlighted in current exhibitions at the MFA Boston. Prof. Hahm has extensive experience researching the mental health of Asian Americans. She has developed and released culturally relevant intervention programs like AWARE (Asian American Women’s Actions in Resilience and Empowerment), with variations aimed at students and artists.
