Prof. Thomas Byrne will speak at a Simon Communities of Ireland webinar about the connection between affordable housing and homelessness this Thursday. “Homelessness is fundamentally a problem rooted in a lack of affordable housing,” Byrne explained in a “Lunchtime Live” broadcast on Ireland’s Newstalk.com radio preceding the event. “Data and research from the United States make this clear: rates of homelessness skyrocket in communities where the median rent exceeds 30% of the median income. Put a little bit differently, if you and I are neighbors and paying more than a third of your income on rent, the odds are much higher that a lot of people in your city or town are going to be experiencing homelessness.” In the webinar, Bryne will use a recent study he co-authored to illustrate the connection between affordable housing and homelessness, and draw parallels between the housing crises in Ireland and the United States.
