Doctoral Student Organization.

What is the BUSPH Doctoral Student Organization (DSO)?

We are excited to serve as the first interdepartmental association geared specifically towards PhD and DrPH students at BUSPH! We aim to provide a forum for public health doctoral students to support each other, share research ideas and opportunities, and promote social and academic exchange among the different degree programs. The DSO facilitates communication among doctoral students through formal and informal meetings, as well as email exchanges. All past and present doctoral students are welcome and encouraged to participate as often as your schedule allows.

What are the goals of the Doctoral Student Organization?

  1. To foster interdepartmental interaction and collaboration
  2. To promote professional development through research presentations, discussions, and training
  3. To have fun and network through various social events

What events and meetings will be held?

We host social events and organize professional development opportunities geared specifically towards doctoral students. We also host meetings that feature student presentations (10-15 minute talks, plus feedback). These meetings provide opportunities to learn about research being done by doctoral students in different disciplines, provide and receive feedback on research challenges, discuss issues related to the doctoral program experience and how to improve it, or practice for presentations to a wider audience.

Is attendance mandatory? What is the level of involvement?

None of this is mandatory, though we encourage you to get as involved as possible! The more participation, the more we all benefit. The Doctoral Student Organization is a student-run group – we all understand the obligations we already have during the year. In our meetings we intend to highlight common research topics and issues in public health, and how we are approaching them through various disciplines here at SPH.

How can I participate?

If you’d like to get involved in the DSO by giving a presentation (any topic is welcome), help out with planning a social event, or just have some ideas or feedback, please contact us via email at sphdso@bu.edu. To learn about upcoming events, reach out via email to join our listserv or follow us on Twitter (@sphdso)!
