Matthew Fox, professor of epidemiology and global health, received the Teaching Excellence Award at the annual meeting of the Association of Schools & Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) on March 6 through 9 in Arlington, Virginia.

The award is designed to bring visibility to an outstanding graduate public health faculty member and reward them for leading students toward distinction in public health research, teaching, and practice. Fox has won multiple teaching awards for his courses at the School of Public Health, and also regularly teaches advanced epidemiology methods courses abroad, including at the Berlin School of Public Health in Germany, the Copenhagen School of Public Health in Denmark, and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

“Finding innovative ways to explain challenging material to students is something I care deeply about, and I spend a great deal of time thinking of ways to make my courses better,” Fox says. “I was extremely honored to receive this award.”

Members of the SPH community also led discussions and gave presentations at the ASPPH meeting.

Sandro Galea, dean and Robert A. Knox Professor, moderated the plenary session “Insights into Washington, Politics, and the 2018 Elections.”

Jean-Marie Bonofilio, director of development, presented on alumni affairs. Harold Cox, associate dean for public health practice, presented on critical conversations. Beverly Brown, director of development, industry, presented on corporate relations and fundraising. Kara Peterson, executive director of communications, presented on using video to engage students, raise awareness, and promote institutions; and on creating communications partnerships.

The SPH Alumni Reception and Presentations were held during the conference on March 6 in Washington, DC. Presentations were given by Candice Belanoff, clinical assistant professor of community health sciences; Dean Galea; and alumnus Jirair Ratevosian (SPH’07), director of governmental affairs for Africa and Cuba at Gilead Sciences.
